Jean P. du Preez is Director of the International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program (IONP) at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) and Senior Lecturer at the Graduate School for International Policy Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He also serves on the International Steering Committee of the Middle Powers Initiative and the International Panel on Fissile Material.

As an experienced former diplomat and arms control negotiator with 17 years service in the South African Foreign Service, he conducts research and provides policy analysis on the roles and activities of international nonproliferation and disarmament organizations and treaty regimes as they deal with emerging proliferation concerns. He currently focuses on the future of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and related regimes. He teaches courses on the role of international organizations in contemporary international politics and also manages a graduate internship program at international organizations and institutions. As a diplomat, he negotiated several arms control agreements, and advised governments, in particular those from developing countries on matters related to the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Prior to joining CNS he served as South Africa's senior political Counsellor (Disarmament) to the United Nations where he represented his country at the General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and the Non-Aligned Movement. He was also closely involved in the deliberations of the New Agenda Coalition countries. Prior to this assignment, he was Deputy-Director for chemical, biological and missile nonproliferation in the South African Foreign Service, and a member of the South African Council for the Non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction - the South African national authority for implementing the country's international nonproliferation obligations.

He participated in numerous international arms control conferences, including the 1995, 2000 and 2005 NPT Review Conferences and their preparatory committee meetings, the 2001 UN Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons, the UN Expert Panel on Missiles, meetings of the Missile Technology Control Regime and conferences of the Biological Weapons Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention.
