Dauren AbenExecutive Director, CNS NIS Representative Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan
Dauren Aben is the Executive Director of the CNS NIS Representative Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He originally joined the office as program coordinator in July 2003. After graduating from Kainar University in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1997 with a B.A. in International Relations, he worked as a project manager in the field of political, social and marketing research for the Giller Institute, JSC Karavan and the Research Group Central Asian Project, and as a manager responsible for foreign investor relations at the Kazakhstan Investment Promotion Center KAZINVEST. In 1999, Dauren received his M.A. in International Relations from the same university. In May 2003, he graduated from the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) with an M.A. in International Policy Studies and certificate in nonproliferation. As a MIIS student, he worked at CNS for the NIS Nuclear and Missile Database, focusing on Russia's closed cities, nuclear weapons facilities, and fissile materials. Presently, Dauren co-edits the monthly newsletter International Export Control Observer. His research interests also cover issues of regional security in Central Asia and the creation of a Central Asian Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone. In addition to his research activities, Dauren is responsible for the management of the Almaty office.
